Here is a list of issues you may want to consider at your first appointment. Check your therapist has the relevant qualifications and experience. Check the approach the therapist uses, and how it relates to your problem. Check the therapist is in Counselling Supervision (a professional requirement). Check that the therapist is a member of a professional body and abides by a Code of Ethics. Wherever possible obtain a copy. Discuss your expectations of therapy and the goals you want to achieve. Ask about fees and discuss the frequency and estimated duration of therapy. Arrange regular review sessions with your therapist to evaluate your progress. Do not be coerced into a long-term counselling contract unless you are satisfied it is necessary and beneficial to you.
