Here is a list of issues you may want to consider at your first appointment.

  • Check your therapist has the relevant qualifications and experience.
  • Check the approach the therapist uses, and how it relates to your problem.
  • Check the therapist is in Counselling Supervision (a professional requirement).
  • Check that the therapist is a member of a professional body and abides by a Code of Ethics. Wherever possible obtain a copy.
  • Discuss your expectations of therapy and the goals you want to achieve.
  • Ask about fees and discuss the frequency and estimated duration of therapy.
  • Arrange regular review sessions with your therapist to evaluate your progress.
  • Do not be coerced into a long-term counselling contract unless you are satisfied it is necessary and beneficial to you.
